Higher education and returning to school

Attaining higher education is a major milestone and investment in one’s future. In Canada, post-secondary education offers diverse pathways—from university degrees to college diplomas, from the unique CEGEP system in Québec to adult training and continuing education programs. As of 2025, the landscape continues to evolve. Whether you’re a fresh high-school graduate, an adult returning to school, or an international student considering Canada, understanding the system, opportunities, and how Canadian credentials compare to foreign ones is critical.
University and College Education in Canada
Canada hosts a strong network of universities and colleges. Universities offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees; colleges offer diplomas, certificates and applied programs. According to a 2025 report by the Higher Education Strategy Association (HESA), the state of post-secondary education in Canada continues to face pressures around funding, access and evolving learner demographics.
One of the clear advantages of Canadian higher education is its global reputation. As one blog point notes, “Canada’s globally respected education system is one of the top reasons international students choose to study here… you’ll earn a respected degree, pay affordable tuition, and have a clear path to work and immigration.”
Tuition fees remain lower compared to some other anglophone countries, though they vary by province and by whether you are an international student. Institutions also increasingly emphasize co-op, experiential learning, work placements and pathways to employment.
The Québec CEGEP System
In Québec, the post-secondary landscape includes the unique CEGEP (Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel) system. These are general and vocational colleges that serve as either pre-university (2 years) or technical (3 years) routes. Students finishing a 2-year pre-university CEGEP may then enter a Québec university with advanced standing. Technical CEGEP diplomas lead directly to the job market or further studies.
For adult learners and those changing careers, CEGEPs also offer continuing education, bridging programs and flexible formats (even part-time, evenings, online). The CEGEP system is well-suited for those seeking a practical credential, or a pathway into university.
Adult Education, Returning to Studies & Continuing Education
Canada is seeing a growing emphasis on lifelong learning, continuing education and up-skilling/reskilling. Adults returning to studies—whether to complete a high school equivalency, update credentials, switch careers or gain additional training—are increasingly supported.
A notable update: as of 3 May 2024, the GED (General Educational Development) program has been replaced in Canada by the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC). This new credential is designed for adults lacking a high school diploma and aims to reflect industry standards, be bilingual (English/French) and facilitate access to further education or training.
Continuing education certificates, micro-credentials, short courses and online learning are also more accessible. Institutions provide flexible scheduling, part-time options and recognition for prior learning or work experience. One resource notes that completing a certificate program “can boost your career prospects – whether you are just starting out, making a mid-life career change, or pursuing a promotion.”
Financial Support & Scholarships
Education in Canada is supported by a range of grants, savings plans and scholarships. For example, the student grant for full-time students allows up to CAD 4,200 per year or CAD 525 per month of study until the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
International students have access to fully-funded scholarships (2025) covering tuition, living costs and travel.
For domestic savings, programs like the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) allow families to save for post-secondary education with government contributions.
Why a Canadian Credential Offers Advantages (vs. Foreign Credentials)
One important consideration for immigrants or internationally-educated individuals is the value of holding a Canadian credential. Here are key advantages:
-
Recognition by Canadian employers: Even if you hold a foreign degree, you may still need your credentials assessed against Canadian standards. One article mentions that obtaining a post-graduate Canadian diploma helps “gain a recognized Canadian credential … Having credentials that employers recognize makes it easier for you to find work in Canada.”
-
Pathways to employment and immigration: Canadian institutions often link education with work-integrated learning, co-ops and job placements. Moreover, studying in Canada may support immigration pathways (post-study work permits, provincial nominee programs).
-
Flexibility and practical learning: Many Canadian programs emphasize applied learning, hands-on training and alignment with labour-market needs (especially in colleges and technical programs).
-
Credibility and portability: Degrees/diplomas from recognized Canadian institutions are globally respected, which may help locally and internationally.
-
Adult-friendly learning: For mature learners, returning to education in Canada offers structured support, recognition of prior learning, bridging programs and adult-learner friendly options.
-
Better alignment with Canadian job market: A Canadian credential ensures your education is aligned with local standards, terminology and employer expectations.
Emerging Trends & 2025 Updates
Several trends and updates from 2025 should be noted:
-
Canada is tightening financial requirements for international students applying for study permits effective 1 September 2025. These changes aim to ensure students have sufficient funds for living costs and to reduce housing/healthcare strain.
-
The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) replacing the GED (see above) signals stronger support for adult learners and recognition of non-traditional learner pathways.
-
The data on post-secondary education in Canada (HESA 2025) highlight pressures around access, cost, adult learners, and the need for institutional flexibility.
-
Although not strictly education-only, the environmental, demographic and economic shifts mean education providers are adapting curricula to emerging sectors (green economy, digital skills).
-
For Québec especially, CEGEPs and continuing education programs are adapting services with increased flexibility, part-time options and alignment with lifelong learning goals (though specific 2025 policy updates may vary by province).
How to Choose the Right Path & Practical Steps for Students (and Adult Learners)
1. Clarify your goal. Are you aiming for a university degree, a practical/technical diploma, a CEGEP credential, or returning to study as an adult? Each path has different timelines, costs and outcomes.
2. Research institutions and programs. Look into universities, colleges, CEGEPs, adult education centres. Check accreditation, recognition, pathways to work.
3. Understand financials. Tuition, living costs, scholarships, grants. If you’re an international student, understand legislation/requirements (e.g., new financial thresholds).
4. For adult learners: Explore bridging programs, certificate courses, recognition of prior learning (RPL) and part-time formats. Consider the CAEC if you need a high school equivalency.
5. For international credentials: Determine if you need equivalency assessments. Consider obtaining a Canadian credential (or bridging certificate) to enhance recognition.
6. Use co-ops, internships and work experience. These enhance employability and help transition from education to the labour market.
7. Choose flexible options if needed. Many programs now offer online, evening, part-time or hybrid formats, which is especially helpful for working adults or those changing careers.
8. Think long-term: Employment and immigration. Studying in Canada may open post-study work permits, provincial nominee streams, and support for longer-term settlement.
The Return on Investment: What a Degree, Diploma or Credential from Canada Can Deliver
-
Higher employment rates and earning potential compared to non-credential holders or credentials not recognized locally.
-
Improved mobility: A Canadian credential may help when moving between provinces or internationally.
-
Up-to-date skills: Canadian programs are often designed in consultation with industry, focusing on current market needs.
-
Intangible benefits: Exposure to multicultural environment, bilingual (English/French) settings (especially in Québec), networking, Canadian work culture.
-
Lifelong learning: Many institutions support continuing education, adult learners and reskilling, enabling mid-career shifts.
Special Focus: Adult Learners & Lifelong Learning
Adult learners bring unique experiences and needs. Returning to studies can be motivated by career change, upgrading skills, re-entry into workforce or personal growth. The CAEC credential helps those without a high school diploma to access training or further education.
Moreover, continuing education and certificate programs are designed for flexibility and relevance. They provide shorter duration, focused skill enhancement, and sometimes direct employment outcomes. For example, certificate programs are often marketed to career changers or those aiming for skill-based credentials.
In many cases, colleges and universities offer “laddering” pathways: certificate → diploma → degree, making the transition easier for adult learners.
What About Québec?
In Québec, for adult learners, the CEGEP system and continuing education centres provide accessible options. For example, a technical CEGEP diploma may lead directly into employment or transfer to a university program. Adult Éducation permanente programs in Québec allow adults to complete secondary or vocational education at flexible schedules.
If you’re interested in bilingual education, French-language programs or Québec work culture, studying in Québec offers distinct advantages, especially for French speakers.
Challenges and Considerations
-
Studying in Canada still involves cost: tuition + living expenses, especially for international students.
-
For adult learners, balancing studies with work, family or other commitments can be demanding—choosing the right format, support services and pacing is important.
-
Foreign credentials may not always be fully recognized; bridging or additional Canadian credentials may be necessary.
-
International students face stricter requirements (as of 2025) regarding finances and permit caps.
-
Not all programs are created equal—carefully evaluate curriculum, institutional reputation, accreditation and outcomes.
Finally..
Post-secondary education in Canada in 2025 offers rich opportunities across universities, colleges, CEGEPs (in Québec), adult and continuing education. For international students, domestic learners and adults returning to study, Canada’s system provides valued credentials, strong pathways to employment and residency, and a supportive multicultural environment.
However, success depends on making informed choices: selecting the right program, understanding costs and recognition, leveraging practical experience (co-ops, internships), and adapting to changing policy environments (especially for international students). A Canadian credential—whether a degree, diploma or certificate—often provides clearer recognition, better alignment with the Canadian job market and enhanced career flexibility compared to foreign credentials alone.
If you’re planning to study, return to school, or upgrade your credentials in Canada, consider your goals, budget, timing and format. Education is not just about credentials—it’s about building skills, networks and opportunities for the next chapter of your career.

Each person receives a unique UCI, which remains the same for life. Even if you submit multiple applications to IRCC, your UCI does not change, although each application will have its own application number.
If you have previously applied to IRCC, you likely already have a UCI. When submitting a new application, the same UCI will continue to be used.
A UCI is made up of digits only and is typically either 8 or 10 digits long. It may appear with or without hyphens.
Common formats include: ####-#### or ##-####-####.
If you have recently applied, you may temporarily see a number such as CAN1234567. This is a provisional identifier that will later be replaced by your permanent UCI once your information is fully processed.
