How Your Profile Submission Date Can Decide Your Invitation in Express Entry
Published on 22-03-2026

Meeting the Comprehensive Ranking System cut off score in an Express Entry draw does not automatically guarantee that you will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence. While your CRS score is the main factor, the timing of your profile submission can also influence the final outcome.
The role of profile submission timing
In situations where multiple candidates have the same CRS score at the cut off, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada applies what is known as the tie breaking rule. This rule gives priority to candidates who submitted their profiles earlier.
Each draw includes a specific date and time used for tie breaking. Only candidates who created their profiles before that exact moment will receive an invitation. Those who submitted their profiles later, even by a few minutes, will remain in the pool despite having the same score.
How selection works in practice
Express Entry draws are conducted periodically, and candidates are ranked based on their CRS scores. Invitations are issued starting from the highest scores and moving downward until the target number of invitations is reached.
When several candidates share the same score at the cut off, the tie breaking rule acts as a secondary filter. For example, if the cut off score is 509 and the tie breaking timestamp is set to a specific date and time, only candidates who submitted their profiles before that moment will be invited. Others with the same score but a later submission time will not be selected in that round.
Important clarifications
It is important to understand that having an older profile does not increase your CRS score. Time spent in the pool does not provide additional points, and a newer profile with a higher score will always rank above an older profile with a lower score.
The advantage of an earlier submission only applies in the rare situation where candidates have identical scores at the cut off. In all other cases, the CRS score remains the dominant factor.
Updating and maintaining your profile
You can update your Express Entry profile at any time to reflect changes such as improved language test results, additional education, or new work experience. These updates do not affect your original submission timestamp.
However, if your profile expires after twelve months or becomes ineligible due to expired documents such as language test results, you will need to create a new profile. In that case, you will receive a new submission date and lose the advantage of your previous timestamp.
Is it worth entering the pool early
Entering the Express Entry pool as soon as possible can be a smart strategy, even if your CRS score is not yet highly competitive. There are no disadvantages to joining early, and it can provide some potential benefits.
First, it secures an earlier submission date, which may help you in tie breaking situations. Second, it allows you to remain eligible in case of unexpected draws with lower cut off scores. While rare, such draws have occurred in the past and invited a large number of candidates with relatively low scores.
At the same time, you can continue improving your profile while already in the pool. For example, you can update your profile after completing a degree or achieving better language results, which may significantly increase your CRS score without losing your initial submission date.
What matters most
Although the tie breaking rule can give a slight advantage to older profiles, it should be viewed as a secondary factor. Your CRS score remains the most important element in determining whether you will receive an invitation.
If your score is above the cut off, you will be invited regardless of when you submitted your profile. If your score is below the cut off, the tie breaking rule will not apply at all.
In conclusion, submitting your profile early can offer a small advantage in specific situations, but focusing on improving your CRS score is still the most effective strategy for success in Express Entry.

An application number is usually made up of one or more letters followed by several digits (for example, E123456789). The letters at the beginning indicate the type of application.
Examples of application number prefixes:
- E123456789 – Economic application (commonly used for Express Entry)

UCI (Unique Client Identifier)
The UCI, or Unique Client Identifier, is a personal reference number assigned by IRCC to each individual. It is used to identify and track a client across all their applications.
Each person receives a unique UCI, which remains the same for life. Even if you submit multiple applications to IRCC, your UCI does not change, although each application will have its own application number.
If you have previously applied to IRCC, you likely already have a UCI. When submitting a new application, the same UCI will continue to be used.
A UCI is made up of digits only and is typically either 8 or 10 digits long. It may appear with or without hyphens.
Common formats include: ####-#### or ##-####-####.
If you have recently applied, you may temporarily see a number such as CAN1234567. This is a provisional identifier that will later be replaced by your permanent UCI once your information is fully processed.
