PEQ 2026: How I recommend preparing before it reopens
Published on 07-04-2026
Written by Medy Zeus
If you’re planning to apply through the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ), I’ll be very honest with you: preparation is everything.
I’ve seen too many people wait until the last minute, only to realize they’re missing documents, don’t meet a requirement, or simply aren’t ready to submit. And with PEQ, timing matters a lot. Before it was suspended in November 2025, the system was essentially first come, first served. So when it reopens, I strongly expect a similar rush.
Nothing is officially confirmed yet regarding the exact rules for the relaunch in 2026, but based on the latest updates from IRCC and MIFI, we can already anticipate the structure and prepare smartly.
Let me walk you through what I would personally do if I were in your position.
First, understand what PEQ really is
The PEQ is one of the fastest pathways to permanent residence for people already in Quebec. It’s designed for two main profiles:
One, graduates from Quebec institutions
Two, temporary foreign workers with Quebec work experience
The idea behind the program is simple. If you’ve studied or worked in Quebec and integrated into society, especially through the French language, Quebec wants to keep you.
From what I’ve seen in recent policy directions, Quebec is putting even more emphasis on integration, especially French proficiency and local work experience. So if you’re not strong in French yet, this is something I would prioritize immediately.
Don’t Assume the rules will stay the same
This is very important.
The last official version of the PEQ was abolished on November 19, 2025. The guides and forms still available online reflect the old system. That means they are useful for preparation, but they are not guarantees.
I personally expect adjustments, possibly stricter conditions, especially regarding:
-
French level requirements
-
Work experience criteria
-
Processing caps or quotas
So my advice is simple: prepare based on the old rules, but stay flexible.
Get your documents ready now
This is where most people fail.
When PEQ reopens, you don’t want to start gathering documents. You want to already have everything ready.
Here’s what I recommend preparing in advance:
* Identity and Civil Status
Make sure your passport is valid. Gather birth certificates, marriage certificates if applicable, and any official identity documents.
* Diplomas and Transcripts
If you’re applying through the graduate stream, your Quebec diploma must be eligible. I suggest you double-check that your program meets PEQ criteria.
* Work Experience Proof
If you’re applying as a worker, prepare:
-
Employment contracts
-
Pay slips
-
Employer letters describing your role
I’ve seen applications delayed or refused because job descriptions didn’t clearly match requirements. Be precise.
* Proof of French
This is a big one.
Depending on future updates, French requirements may become stricter. Even if you studied in French, I still recommend having a recognized test as backup.
* Financial Readiness
Even if PEQ doesn’t always require strong proof of funds like other programs, you still need to show you can support yourself.
Practice submitting quickly
This might sound unusual, but I actually recommend opening the old application forms and reviewing them in detail.
Look at:
-
What information is requested
-
How forms are structured
-
What supporting documents are needed
Why? Because when the program reopens, speed matters. You don’t want to be reading instructions for the first time on submission day.
Understand the fees
As of 2026, the expected fees are:
-
Principal applicant: $940
-
Spouse: $201
-
Dependent child: $201
It's good for you to set this money aside early. That way, you’re not scrambling financially when the program opens.
Be ready for the “First Come, First Served” reality
From what I’ve seen, this is one of the most stressful parts of PEQ.
If the system comes back with intake limits, spots could fill very quickly. We’ve seen similar situations in other immigration programs where applications close within hours or days.
So here’s what I would personally do:
-
Have all documents scanned and organized
-
Double-check every form in advance
-
Be ready to submit as soon as the portal opens
Timing can literally make the difference between applying this year or waiting another year.
Stay updated constantly
Policies are changing fast, especially in Quebec immigration.
I see many people relying on outdated information, and that’s risky. I strongly recommend:
-
Checking official MIFI updates regularly
-
Following reliable immigration sources
-
Avoiding assumptions based on past rules
Even small changes, like a new language requirement or document format, can impact your eligibility.
Think beyond PEQ
I’ll be honest with you: even if PEQ reopens, you should not rely on it as your only plan.
Immigration policies in Quebec have become less predictable. So I always suggest having a backup strategy, such as:
-
Regular Skilled Worker Program
-
Express Entry (if applicable outside Quebec)
-
Employer-supported pathways
This way, you’re not stuck if PEQ changes or becomes more restrictive.
Finally..
If I had to summarize everything in one sentence, it would be this: prepare before the program opens, not after.
I see a lot of candidates who are eligible but miss their chance simply because they weren’t ready in time.
Start now. Organize your documents. Improve your French. Understand the process. And most importantly, stay flexible because changes are very likely.
When PEQ reopens, the people who succeed won’t be the most qualified. They’ll be the most prepared.

An application number is usually made up of one or more letters followed by several digits (for example, E123456789). The letters at the beginning indicate the type of application.
Examples of application number prefixes:
- E123456789 – Economic application (commonly used for Express Entry)
- EP12345678 – Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
- V123456789 – Visitor visa, Visitor record, or eTA

Please print the form and complete it using a BLUE PEN. Only fill in the sections highlighted in the example provided.
Only fill in the highlighted sections
If your application includes family members (spouse or dependents), each person must complete and sign their respective section of the form.
Make sure all information is accurate and matches your official documents before sending the form.
UCI (Unique Client Identifier)
The UCI, or Unique Client Identifier, is a personal reference number assigned by IRCC to each individual. It is used to identify and track a client across all their applications.
Each person receives a unique UCI, which remains the same for life. Even if you submit multiple applications to IRCC, your UCI does not change, although each application will have its own application number.
If you have previously applied to IRCC, you likely already have a UCI. When submitting a new application, the same UCI will continue to be used.
A UCI is made up of digits only and is typically either 8 or 10 digits long. It may appear with or without hyphens.
Common formats include: ####-#### or ##-####-####.
If you have recently applied, you may temporarily see a number such as CAN1234567. This is a provisional identifier that will later be replaced by your permanent UCI once your information is fully processed.
