The Canadian Express Entry system continues to show an interesting dynamic: even though the overall growth of the candidate pool has slowed significantly, competition at the higher CRS levels is still increasing. From what I observe, this suggests a system that is not simply expanding or contracting, but gradually becoming more compressed at the top.

Between April 12 and April 26, the total number of profiles in the pool increased only slightly, moving from 233,555 to 234,452. That is a net increase of just 897 candidates, which is notably lower than the previous period where growth exceeded 2,000 profiles. In my view, this slowdown does not necessarily indicate reduced interest in immigration, but rather a more selective inflow combined with strong outflows due to invitations being issued.

A noticeable shift in CRS distribution

One of the most important developments is happening in the mid-range CRS bands. Several score ranges between 421 and 460 saw declines, with a total reduction of more than 1,300 profiles across these brackets. I think this is likely the result of recent targeted draws, particularly those aimed at French-speaking candidates and trades occupations, which tend to remove a significant number of profiles from these segments.

For example, the French-language draw held in mid-April and the trades draw earlier in the month likely contributed to this redistribution. These draws often pull candidates out of the mid-tier ranges, which explains the contraction observed in those brackets.

At the same time, higher CRS ranges are showing a different pattern. The 501 to 600 range increased by 250 profiles during the same period, continuing a trend of gradual upward pressure in this segment. Meanwhile, the 601 to 1200 range also grew, largely driven by new provincial nominees entering the pool with the standard 600-point boost.

From my perspective, this is one of the clearest signs that the upper end of the Express Entry system is becoming more saturated, even when overall pool growth is minimal.

Impact of recent Express Entry draws

It is important to note that the April 26 snapshot does not include the impact of three draws that took place between April 27 and April 29. These draws collectively issued 6,473 invitations to apply (ITAs), which would have significantly reshaped the distribution afterward.

These included:

• A French-language proficiency draw with 4,000 invitations and a cutoff of 400
• A Canadian Experience Class draw with 2,000 invitations and a cutoff of 514
• A Provincial Nominee Program draw with 473 invitations and a cutoff of 795

If we interpret these results, it suggests that thousands of candidates were removed from different segments of the pool shortly after the April 26 data snapshot. I would expect the most visible impact to be in the lower and upper CRS ranges, particularly among French-speaking candidates and high-scoring provincial nominees.

Increasing pressure in Canadian Experience Class draws

Another trend worth highlighting is the tightening of Canadian Experience Class draws. Cutoff scores have remained consistently above 510 in recent months, and in the most recent draws, they have reached 514 or higher. In my view, this indicates a clear backlog forming at the upper-mid CRS level.

CEC draw sizes have also been relatively small, with only 2,000 invitations issued in recent rounds. When draw sizes decrease while the pool remains large, competition naturally intensifies, which explains the rising cutoff scores.

How competitive is the pool becoming?

Looking at the broader structure of the pool, the largest concentration of candidates remains in the 351 to 400 range, which accounts for more than 22 percent of all profiles. However, a significant portion of candidates is now also concentrated between 401 and 500, meaning that a large share of applicants is competing within a relatively tight scoring band.

From a strategic point of view, I think this creates a challenging environment for candidates in the mid-range. Even small shifts in draw type or size can significantly change outcomes for individuals in these brackets.

At the very top, the 501 to 600 range now represents nearly 6 percent of the pool, which is relatively high considering the competitive advantage these scores provide. However, with provincial nominations and targeted draws continuing, this segment is also becoming more crowded than before.

Overall, what stands out most is not just the slight growth of the Express Entry pool, but the redistribution of candidates across score ranges. The system appears to be tightening at both ends: mid-range candidates are being pulled upward or selected out, while high-scoring candidates continue to accumulate.

I personally see this as a sign of a more selective immigration strategy, where targeted draws are increasingly shaping the composition of the pool rather than broad, generalized selection.

If this trend continues, I think competition will remain intense for candidates between 450 and 520 CRS, while those above 600 will increasingly depend on provincial nominations or specific program categories rather than general draws.
